Trauma’s Affect on Your Nervous System

The state of our bodies influences our behavior, emotions, and thinking. Trauma affects our physical health significantly. We come into the world wired for connection. With our first breath, we embark on a quest to feel safe in our bodies, in our environments, and in our relationships with others. The autonomic nervous system is our personal surveillance system, always on guard, asking the question, “Is this safe?” Its goal is to protect us by sensing safety and risk, listening moment by moment to what is happening in and around our bodies and in the connections we have to others.

Trauma has a significant impact on all areas of life. This impact stems from the reactions that occur in the body after a traumatic event. Trauma activates the fight or flight response in the brain, which is a survival mechanism that prepares the body for threat. When this happens, our body becomes flooded with excess adrenaline and cortisol.

Negative effects of adrenaline and cortisol on the brain include:

While this trauma response is useful to help keep us safe in dangerous situations, too much cortisol and adrenaline cause negative physical health side effects, as well.

Some of these side effects to physical health include:

Experienced and competent therapists will utilize the window of tolerance to work with clients when dealing with trauma. The window of tolerance is the optimal range of arousal within which a client can safely work on their trauma. For individuals who have experienced trauma, the window of tolerance is narrowed.

Trauma affects the parasympathetic nervous system by causing hyperarousal, hypervigilance, flashbacks, intrusive thoughts, emotional numbness, dissociation, and difficulties with emotional regulation. Therapy aims to widen the window of tolerance by utilizing coping and regulation skills to help clients be more efficient in dealing with distress.

Our Methodology

The Sovereign Body method helps our clients to access safety first, from which they then learn to reconnect with their bodies. The body, through feelings, guided us to what is right for us. We experience feelings because something in the environment was important to us. After listening to these feelings, it is important to have a practice through which we let go of those feelings.

This method then allows our clients to let go of negative belief systems affected by past survival mechanisms, i.e traumatic or stressful experiences. Once you are free from the weight of the past, you are able to create a new identity and reality for yourself.

This means therapy at Evolve is more structured to prevent weekly venting sessions with no lasting change.

This method is especially effective for those with nervous system dysregulation or people who have tried therapy in the past but still feel disconnected from themselves.
